New Musicals for Kids

Theatre Building Chicago announces the fourth season of “New Musicals for Kids.” TBC makes the under four-foot patron (pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade) the star audience with three new shows created by members of its nationally recognized Musical Theatre Writer’s workshop, beginning October 2008.

Theatre Building Chicago’s “New Musicals for Kids” features adult professional actors performing new works created by members of the musical theatre writers workshop. Group discounts offer value-added bonuses including picnic style lunch facilities and educational materials.

2008-2009 Season

The Reluctant Dragon

book by Christina Biggs, music & lyrics by Marianne Kallen

When: Wed. and Thurs. at 9:30 & 11AM - April 29, 30, May 6, 7, 13, 14 - 2009

The final show of the season is The Reluctant Dragon with book by Christina Biggs, music & lyrics by Marianne Kallen adapted from the classic book by Kenneth Grahame. Bartholomew the dancing dragon who wants nothing more than to be invited to a grand banquet, but that seems unlikely when the famous dragon slayer Sir George comes to town. Now Barty must rely on his practical new friend Will to help him reach a peaceful compromise and earn a seat at the table.

The Adventures of Anansi the Spider

Returning by popular demand in February 2009 is The Adventures of Anansi the Spider with book by Christina Biggs, music & lyrics by Marianne Kallen compiled from the famous African fables. Join in on the wild antics of Anansi the Spider, the beloved trickster of African folklore, and his many savannah friends, as they weave their way through five well-known tales. Together, the stories show how sharing your ideas can make the world a better place.

 

 

Chicago presents the premiere of The Magic Ofrenda with book by Christina Biggs, and music & lyrics by Mike Descoteaux, debuting October 22-November 6, 2008. After her grandma's passing, the heroine Anjelita travels to Mexico to visit her zany Grandpa Juan for el Dia de los Muertos, an uplifting holiday celebrating loved ones no longer with us. With the help of her brother Mateo, painter Frida Kahlo and a comically lovable cast of spirits, Anjelita discovers the colorful tales of her family's past.

Freddy the Flat-Faced School Bus

Freddy has a hard time finding a job and fitting in with the standard school buses – until a citywide weather crisis compels everyone to pull together. Featuring a cast of singing, dancing school buses, this upbeat musical focuses on themes of tolerance and acceptance.

Adapted from Beatrix Potter’s classic story, this musical follows the adventures of a sensible young pig, who is forced to leave home and find his way in the world. Full of delightful animal characters, the musical emphasizes themes of friendship and cooperation.
